Geeks of Gridiron: Week 4 – It’s Hyphen’s Time to Shine

New-Orleans-Saints-Team-Needs

Through the first three weeks, Kelen “B Hyphen” Conley has led the way (34-14), despite a mediocre 9-7 last week. The rookie “Mischievious” McCumber is right behind B Hyphen, going 31-17 through the first three weeks. Thomas “Nocturne” Deja has been the model of consistency of the group, going 10-6 all three weeks. The defending champion, Mike “The Buzz-Saw” Asti (28-20 through 3 weeks)  hasn’t been able to emulate last season’s success, as he sits in fourth place. Anthony “Triple S” Sellers has been the dullest tool in the GoG shed, however, only carving out a 27-21 record through the first three weeks. Can Asti mount a comeback to repeat as champion? Can “Triple S” transform into the proverbial gridiron Einstein? Can Hyphen stay atop the group?

Standings
Conley 34-14 (9-7 week 3)
McCumber 31-17 (8-8 week 3)
Deja 30-18 (10-6 week 3)
Asti 28-20 (7-9 week 3)
Sellers 27-21 (7-9 week 3)

Cincinnati @ Cleveland
Indianapolis @ Jacksonville
Philadelphia @ Denver
New England @ Atlanta
Miami @ New Orleans

Baltimore @ Buffalo
The rookie Mischievious “quoth the Raven, nevermore.” He likes the Bills to win at home, while the rest of the Gridiron Geeks are flying with Joe Flacco and the Ravens.

Chicago @ Detroit
Again, the rookie Mischievious stands alone, taking the Lions at home while the other Gridiron Geeks like Chicago to leave Detroit with a victory.

New York Giants @ Kansas City Chiefs
The Buzz-Saw goes with Eli Manning and the Giants to bounce back against KC, while the other four Gridiron Geeks like Alex Smith, Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs to get back-to-back-to-back-to-back wins.

Pittsburgh @ Minnesota
Which team will get their first win? The rookie Mischievious and “Nocturne” Deja  (you can read Deja’s analysis here) go with Adrian Peterson and the Vikings. The Buzz-Saw, B Hyphen, and Triple S like Pittsburgh to defeat Minnesota in London for their first win of the season.

Arizona @ Tampa Bay
While four of the Gridiron Geeks like Arizona, Mike “the Buzz-Saw” went in the opposite direction and likes the Buccaneers to snipe the Cardinals this week.

Seattle @ Houston
Deja, Hyphen, and Sellers go with the Seahawks on the road, while the rookie Mischievious and the Buzz-Saw like the Texans at home.

New York Jets @ Tennessee
Again, it’s Deja, Hyphen, and Sellers teaming up with the Jets and rookie QB Geno Smith, while the rookie Mischievious and the Buzz-Saw like the Titans to win at home.

Washington @ Oakland
The rookie Mischievious and Sellers go with the Redskins to win in the black hole, while B Hyphen, the Buzz-Saw and Deja like the Raiders to get their second win.

Dallas @ San Diego
B Hyphen, the Buzz-Saw and Deja pick San Diego to get to .500 on the season, while the rookie Mischievious and Sellers go with America’s Team.

Be sure to check back next week as the Gridiron Geeks continue to battle for the title “Minister of the Tricycle”!

Geeks of Gridiron 2013: Week 2 – The Rookie Makes Himself Known

colin-kaepernick-super-bowl
It’s early in the season, but week one saw some unexpected outcomes in the GoG standings. The first year gridiron geek Johnathan “Mischievious” McCumber started the year off with his best Nostradamus interpretation, going 13-3. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Season one champion Mike “The Buzz-Saw” Asti finished  with a putrid 9-7 record and is currently bringing up the rear. Kelen “B Hyphen” Conley went 12-4 while both Anthony “Triple S” and Thomas “Nocturne” Deja went 10-6.  Can Mischievious continue to cause mischief and finish the season on top? Will the Buzz-Saw rectify his horrible first week and defend his title? This weeks picks will provide a little more insight.

Standings
McCumber 13-3
Conley 12-4
Sellers 10-6
Deja 10-6 (You can read Moves Like Curtis for Deja’s analysis)
Asti 9-7

The Unanimous Games (unanimous group picks are bold and italicized)
New York Jets @ New England
St. Louis @ Atlanta
Tennessee @ Houston
Detroit @ Arizona
New Orleans @ Tampa Bay
Jacksonville @ Oakland
Denver @ New York Giants
Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati

The Standout Games
Carolina @ Buffalo
Deja and Sellers favor Cam Newton and the Panthers while Asti, Conley, and the rookie McCumber go with the running back duo of Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller to run the Bills to a victory.

Minnesota @ Chicago
Homefield advantage proves to be the victory factor for Mr. Asti, B Hyphen, Tom “Nocturne” Deja, and “Triple S” Sellers as they all take the Bears to be go 2-0, while the rookie McCumber takes the Vikings to win on the road.

Washington @ Green Bay
Tom “The Nocturne” Deja stands alone as the only one to go with the RGIII and the Redskins. Asti, Conley, the rookie McCumber, and Sellers favor Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to put another mark in the win column.

Miami @ Indianapolis
Kelen “B Hyphen” Conley goes with only 11% percent of the yahoo pick em world that believe Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins will win. “The Buzz-Saw” Asti, “Nocturne” Deja, the rookie McCumber, and Triple S Sellers are all together, going with Andrew Luck and the Colts.

Dallas @ Kansas City
The majority of the group (Asti, McCumber, and Sellers) are Jones-in for a Cowboy victory. B Hyphen and Tom Deja like the Chiefs to defend their home field behind Alex Smith’s arm.

San Diego @ Philadelphia
In an effort to climb out of cellar, Asti takes the Chargers to march in to the city of brotherly love and leave victorious. The other four Gridiron Geeks like Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and the Eagles to continue to fly in new Head Coach Chip Kelly’s high octane offense.

Cleveland @ Baltimore
Tom “Nocturne” Deja goes with the Browns to leave Baltimore with a victory. He’s the only one, as the rest of the Gridiron Geeks envision the Ravens getting their first victory after being embarrassed by the Broncos in week one.

San Francisco @ Seattle
The votes are split between these two as sophomore quarterbacks collide. “The Buzz-Saw” Asti, the rookie “Mischievious” McCumber, and “Triple S” Sellers take Colin Kaepernick, Frank Gore and the 49ers, while B Hyphen and “the Nocturne” Deja like the duo of Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch to lead the Seahawks to a victory at home.

The Howitzer & Buzz-Saw Show – 2013 NFL Preview *

nfl-logo
Are you ready for some football?! Cliche, I know. But really, should we even have to ask? Another NFL season is here, as the Baltimore Ravens, despite some key departures, look to defend their Super Bowl title.

Mike “the Buzz-Saw” Asti and George “the Howitzer” Gerbo guide you through each division with team-by-team (well the worthy teams) analysis and predictions.

Has George finally ventured to Mike’s “the AFC is weak and lacking elite teams” dark side? Are the Broncos a deserving favorite, or capitalizing on a wide open field? Can Atlanta get the job done, now with even more pressure? How sexy are the Seahawks? Which sophomore star quarterback will suffer a slump, if any? And, since it happens every year, which teams will drop from the playoffs one season to the basement the next?

Expect Mike to jump back on a previous bandwagon darling and George to ride a surprising ship, that is sure to sink.

Gear up for the road to Super Bowl XLVIII. This is not just any other preview show. It’s another Howitzer and Buzz-saw preview show. Previewing like only they can, while conquering sports radio, one day, at a time…

Geeks of Gridiron: 2013 Return

peyton
The Trike Team is proud to reintroduce you to Geeks of Gridiron. Mike “The Buzz-Saw” Asti, Kelen “B Hyphen” Conley, Thomas “Nocturne” Deja, and Anthony “Triple S” Sellers return with their biased and non-expert picks of every NFL game throughout the 2013 NFL season. Joining the foursome this season is Johnathan “Mischievious” McCumber.

Last season, the Buzz-Saw took home the first “Minister of the Tricycle” trophy by continually outshining every other competitor. Will his success continue into this season? That question will be answered at the end of the season, as anything less than a repeat performance will be considered a failure. And, yes, we all want to see him fail.

But talk is cheap, it’s time to get to the picks.

The Unanimous Games (unanimous group picks are bold and italicized)
Baltimore @ Denver (played Thursday)
New England @ Buffalo
Minnesota @ Detroit
Oakland @ Indianapolis
Seattle @ Carolina
Kansas City @ Jacksonville
Houston @ San Diego

The Standout Games
Cincinnati @ Chicago
The Buzz-Saw, B Hyphen, Thomas “Nocturne” Deja, and Triple S like the cats from Ohio to go into Chicago and prey on the Bears, while the newcomer Mischievious chose the Bears.

Miami @ Cleveland
Four of the five like the Browns to beat Miami, with Thomas Deja (click here to read his Moves Like Curtis and the reasoning behind every pick) being the lone ranger picking the Dolphins to go to Cleveland and win.

Atlanta @ New Orleans
Like the Cincy/Chicago game, Mischevious stands alone with the Falcons while the rest believe the Saints march to a week one victory.

Tampa Bay @ New York Jets
B Hyphen shows faith in former Mountaineer QB Geno Smith and goes with the Jets at home. The rest of the GoG team like Deja’s paper plane description as they go with the Buccaneers.

Tennessee @ Pittsburgh
Mischievious and Triple S “remember the titans” and believe they will go into Pittsburgh and take down the Steelers, while Deja, The Buzz-Saw, and B Hyphen go with the Steelers.

Arizona @ St. Louis
Asti, B Hyphen, Triple S, and the rookie go with St. Louis while Deja prefers the Cardinals.

Green Bay @ San Francisco
In one of the more intriguing matchups of the week, The Buzz-Saw and Triple S go with the Packers, while B Hyphen, Mischievious, and Deja pick the 49ers.

New York Giants @ Dallas
America’s team they are not, at least not for the GoG team, as Asti, B Hyphen, Deja, and Triple S pick the Giants. The rookie Mischievious, on the other hand, takes the Cowboys.

Philadelphia @ Washington
Mischievious decides to walk alone in yet another game (this is the fourth), flying with the Eagles, while the rest of the GoG team go with RGIII and the Redskins.

And there you have it, the picks from each and every Geek of Gridiron member. Be sure to check back next week as we jostle to become the next Minister of the Tricycle.

The Howitzer & Buzz-Saw Show – A Whole New World

k-bigpic
It’s a whole new world these days. A world that revs up the engines for sports talk. A world that is much more accepting, even amongst the sports community, but also a world with tons of buffoonery for everyone. Mike “the Buzz-Saw” Asti and George “the Howitzer” Gerbo run through this bizarre world with immense destruction and entertainment at a premium.

Major League Baseball, usually hesitant to change, has announced a new instant replay system. This new policy is stemming from mass controversy over pivotal calls in the playoffs and key games the past few seasons. It will involve managers receiving challenges, hoping to take away all the flack of the umpires. While this sounds wonderful, is there a devil’s advocate side to this coin? How will a replay system in baseball be advanced over the years?

It wouldn’t be NFL training camp if there wasn’t asinine drama. The Washington Redskins franchise is rolling in drama that would be worthy of any soap opera. Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan have a different of opinion on how RGIII’s recovery should be handled. Why is this all being way overblown? Is there a right and wrong? Maybe both coach and player are actually right and acting in the expected manner.

Professional wrestling is even discussed, as WWE star Darren Young is now openly gay. One half of the Prime Time Players tag team has come out to the world. There’s been openly gay professional wrestlers in the past, but this marks the first one to be active during his announcement. Will this be used as part of a future storyline? Any chances this is actually a “work?” Mike explains how this wouldn’t have been possible in previous, more not breaking character obsessed eras.

Despite a whole new world, the Howitzer and Buzz-Saw continue to shock the world, by conquering sports radio, one day, at a time…

The Howitzer & Buzz-Saw Show – Kvetching Draft Asininity (Guests: Scott Carasik, Alex Wiederspiel, & Ethan Hammerman)

nfl-draft
Some celebrate Christmas, some celebrate Hanukkah, others celebrate the National Football League’s annual draft, as their most special “holiday” of the calendar year. Mike ‘the Buzz-Saw” Asti and George “the Howitzer’ Gerbo welcome the Kvetching Draftniks guys to the HBS ring. Scott Carasik, Alex Wiederspiel, and Ethan Hammerman spout, or should I say, kvetch, all the knowledge imaginable on the 2013 NFL Draft.

With the Darrelle Revis New York Jets era now officially over (sorry Alex), how does this trade impact the rest of the draft. And what is the future of Revis, now a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, as well as, the team he left behind?

Is Geno Smith truly worthy of a high draft pick, or is he benefiting from a lack of quarterback depth? Are the Minnesota Vikings and Manti Te’o headed towards a perfect marriage? Who will be the diamonds in the rough? Every draft can alter the leagues landscape for decades. For every Shannon Sharpe late round gem, there’s a Ryan Leaf or Tony Mandarich to wreck havoc on a franchise.

Apparently JaMarcus Russell has decided to put down the “purple drank” and attempt a comeback. Where does this rank on the asinine richter scale? Off the charts is a possible answer. Who are the potential overhyped 2013 class draft busts?

The Kvetching Draftniks conquer the NFL Draft, while the Howitzer and Buzz-Saw continue to conquer sports radio, one day, at a time…

The Howitzer & Buzz-Saw Show – An Asinine New Year!

fsu

It’s a new year, yet the HBS is still here! Mike “the Buzz-Saw” Asti and George “the Howitzer” Gerbo say goodbye to 2012 and welcome in An Asinine New Year – 2013. While 2012 set a pretty high bar for asininity in the sports world, 2013 is already getting to work.

Arguably the worst college football bowl season in recent memory continues. What is to blame for these lack luster games and matchups? Will the remaining BCS contests and National Championship Game save this miserable post-season?

With the NFL regualr season now over, it’s time to look ahead to the playoffs. Before that can be done, some important businees needs taken care of. Mike’s 2012 HBS NFL Pick’em championship banner raising ceremony will take place. Once the champagne is popped and the fireworks are finished, Mike and George will give their Wild Card Round picks and even attempt to place the proper blame on the teams that just missed the cut, what their futures will hold, and where the fired head coaches may end up.

After all the football talk, there are some signs for optimism in the NHL labor negociations. The owners and NHL Players Association are actually talking! Not to sound like a bimbo pre-teen female, but OMG! OMG! What does this mean? Will the season be saved? Or is the Buzz-Saw’s hell, fire, and brimstone reality going to come crashing down on the Howitzer’s thoughts of butterflies, rainbows, and a return of hockey?

FYI: Mike still plans to be an unbearable, arrogant, witty, sarcastic prick in 2013. Sorry, if you weren’t a fan before, you will remain displeased. Hey, at least George will be around put him in check (if that’s possible). They conquered 2012 and now embark on a journey of conquering 2013′s sports radio, one day at a time….

The Howitzer & Buzz-Saw Show – An Asinine New Year!

The Howitzer & Buzz-Saw Show – Bah, Humbug!

scrooge

BAH, HUMBUG! Mike “the Buzz-Saw” Asti and George “the Howitzer” Gerbo ring in the Christmas season and the new year in style. In their last show of 2012, your favorite sports geniuses go all over the sports gauntlet.

College basketball enters the program for the first time in awhile. Jim Boeheim’s 900th win is put into perspective, along with an update on the season to date. Has Duke already assured themselves a number one seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament? What’s wrong with some other struggling giants?

From the college hardwood to the pros, the HBS brings you the next chapter in “As The Lakers Asininity Turns.” Does Pau Gasol have to be traded unless things turn around soon? Or will the impending return of Steve Nash be enough to mend their wounds?

While the Lakers are always dramatic, their soap opera doesn’t even hold a candle to the NFL’s New York Jets. Rex Ryan officially becomes the Buzz-Saw’s best friend for life with his decision to start Greg McElroy this week. Was this the right decision? Does Mark Sanchez have a future with the Jets? Will this finally send the message to Tebow Maniacs that it just ain’t happening for their hero? We can dream, right?

In addition to these topics, expect some more MLB off-season talk, most notably a reigning Cy Young winner being traded, Mike to continue to destroy George’s unfounded optimism about the NHL Lockout, as well as, the Week 16 edition of the second annual HBS NFL Pick’em Challenge.

Get those cookies and milk ready for Santa, put out the manger, light the menorah, or do whatever you people do. No matter what holiday you celebrate, just realize the Howitzer and Buzz-Saw conquer sports radio, one day, at a time…
